Sounds…

God's Voice

The sound of wild geese communicating with each other mixed with the sounds of a distant helicopter flying unseen below the eastern horizon all carried on the wings of the wind. The sounds of nature and the sounds of humans echoing and intermingling not just in my ears but deep in my heart and spirit as well.

To which voice do I listen to in order to hear the voice of God? To the sounds of the geese talking with each other? To the sounds of a distant helicopter as it carries its pilots on an unknown mission? To the sounds of the wind that carries all other sounds from their source to my listening ears and my open heart and spirit?

Somewhere in the mish-mash of sounds blending to form an unlikely and often out of tune symphony is the voice of God. Then adding to the symphony I can hear my own voice, “Where are you God? From whence comes your voice?”

Can I answer such a question? Could I even understand the answer should I find one? Is there even an answer?

So many times I have not only longed to hear God speaking directly to me but I’ve NEEDED to hear his soft voice against the backdrop of my noisy chaotic crazy life. So many times I’ve NEEDED to hear, “Gary, I love you!” That’s all I wanted to hear. I don’t need to hear, “Gary, I have things for you that will make your life easy, things that will lift you up when you’re down, things that will make your life uncomplicated.”

As important and those things are it is love I need not things! When you are in a LOVE relationship with someone “things” are inherent within the relationship. When LOVE meets LOVE it doesn’t matter how hard or how easy life is, there is no up or down while there may be hills and mountains to climb or valleys to cross LOVE provides the power to forge ahead at whatever speed is required. When LOVE meets LOVE the complications that come with life give way to the simplicity of giving oneself not to the LOVE relationship but to each other.

“Where are you God? From whence comes your voice?”

Some will say God’s voice comes from beyond the heavens from some golden city with streets of gold and a huge celestial palace where God calls home. Others say God’s voice comes from within your heart where the Holy Spirit lives and thrives. Still others say, “God? There is no evidence of a God who loves!” And there are even those who have searched a lifetime in search of a benevolent being who favors and gives things to those who live good moral lives.

“Where are you God? From whence comes your voice?”

I am not an educated theologian. I have no seminary degrees in bible study, in fact in some ways I may be considered bible illiterate. Why, I stumbled, fell, and failed so much at living that I’ve needed the Holy Spirit to tutor me almost from day one. In spite of those seemingly handicaps do I hang my head in shame because I am not rich and famous? Do I hang my head as a loser because my name isn’t a household word? NO! A thousand NO’s! A million NO’s! I not only LOVE God but I am IN LOVE with God! And God IS IN LOVE with me! And that’s enough for me, in fact that’s enough for anyone!

“Where are you God? From whence comes your voice?”

From deep within this uneducated, bible illiterate, who stumbles, who falls, who fails more often than not comes my own faint, quivering, power filled, unapologetic voice, “God is alive! God’s voice doesn’t come from within or from the sounds of nature! God’s voice doesn’t come from the sounds of humans! God’s voice doesn’t come from studying and reading the bible! God’s voice comes from his LOVE for me and his LOVE for you!”

There is a reason God is bigger than all the universes and galaxies combined – there can be no other God’s! And the God of all the universes and galaxies not only LOVES us but is also IN LOVE with us! And out of his LOVE for us comes the voice of the ONE and ONLY God with the sounds of LOVE in his voice.

Enjoy God because God is enjoying you!

Listen and Believe!

Grace and PEACE,

Gary Piper
