Glory Seed Devotionals, 2015: Year of Promise

The Gift…

They came to a place named Golgotha, which means “Place of a Skull.” There they gave Jesus some wine mixed with a drug to ease the pain. But when Jesus tasted what it was, he refused to drink it. The soldiers nailed Jesus to a cross and gambled to see who would get his clothes. (Matthew 27:33-35 CEV)

Once upon a time in a Garden called Gethsemane a tree grew tall, its roots growing deep into the rich fertile soil, its trunk grew stout and strong, It’s branches reaching into the heavens as if seeking to touch the Creator.

One night as the tree stood against the star filled sky it witnessed the arrest of a young man named Jesus. Suddenly a voice rang out, “I’ll cut down this tree we can use it to crucify him.” And the tree felt a terrible pain and suddenly the stars disappeared.

Later the young man named Jesus was sentenced to die by the very ones who proclaimed him their King. After being severely beaten and abused the young man was thrown on the tree that now formed a cross. The two became one as the nails were driven through the wrists of the young man and into the cross the tree came alive once again. “Do not worry Master,” it whispered to the dying man, “I will hold you and we will die together.”

“My dear friend,” Jesus whispered in return, “Today you will forever stand as a witness to my undying love for all those who take up their cross and follow me.” Minutes later the two died together. Instantly at the base of the cross two flowers appeared. One to commemorate the death of God’s Only Begotten Son, the other to commemorate your eternal life, a gift given by a simple tree and a simple carpenter named Jesus.

Today as you go about your daily tasks when you happen to walk by, drive by, or otherwise see a tree think about that fateful day so long ago when Jesus gave his life for you. Take just a few moments and say, “Thank you Jesus!” I know he’ll be happy to hear from you.

While the story you’ve just read is fiction written from the world of my imagination however, because we have his word you know in your heart what Jesus did for you all those years ago is as real as you are. “I tell you for certain that I am the gate for the sheep. Everyone who came before me was a thief or a robber, and the sheep did not listen to any of them. I am the gate. All who come in through me will be saved. Through me they will come and go and find pasture. A thief comes only to rob, kill, and destroy. I came so that everyone would have life, and have it in its fullest. I am the good shepherd, and the good shepherd gives up his life for his sheep.” (John 10:7-11 CEV)

Believe! Anticipate! Experience! Be transformed!

Grace and PEACE, Amen!
