Glory Seed Devotionals, 2015: Year of Promise
Celebrating the Gifts of Christmas 2015…
Today we celebrate the gift of peace. “But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.” (Mark 4:38–39, NKJV)
As important as Jesus’ words, “PEACE be still,” are to each of us the real lesson for us in these two short verses is the fact “He was in the stern asleep on a pillow.” The disciples, some who were seasoned boatmen were fighting for their lives. The wind raged. The lightning flashed. The thunder roared. The breaker waves pounded the little craft. The disciples fought. We hold our breath. Jesus slept. God smiled. Whether you believe it or not we are in that boat with the disciples, “Jesus, we are floundering and near becoming shark food, don’t You care?” our voices echo above the storm.
Peace is not the absence of “storms” PEACE is the presence of Jesus! I know that is nothing new to you. I also know (from experience) there are times when the “storms” don’t suddenly disappear as they did on that night long ago. After awhile the constant pounding against our fragile lives has a way of creating in us a hunger for a conflict free life. And what’s wrong with a conflict free life you wonder.
There are times (more than we really know) when God rather than giving us peace instead gives us wisdom and courage while using conflict to deepen and strengthen our relationship with him. James writes, “But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.” (James 3:17, NKJV)
The angels not only sang they also DECLARED “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” (Luke 2:14, NKJV) Since that wonderful night long ago PEACE has never been taken from the earth the Holy Spirit is our source of PEACE. (However, you may want to check out Psalms 103:9.)
Holy Spirit, “I feel your light in my life and in the world. I am grateful for the Savior who awaits us, and eagerly await the time of rejoicing. Let me look forward in hope and turn to you with great trust, knowing you will guide my steps along the unknown path of this day.”**
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might!
Grace and PEACE, Amen!
