Celebrating the Gifts of Christmas 2015…
Today we celebrate the Gift of Hope. Not hope as wishful thinking but Christmas Hope as longing in expectation. There’s a FOUR letter word associated with Hope that really, really frustrates me. WAIT! I know there are people out there who are good at waiting but I am not one of them! If you’ve been with me for awhile you already know that. Yet as frustrated as I get when I am forced wait I also know wait and hope are not only inseparable but have hidden blessings as well. One of the things that make a gift of great value to the recipient is the impact it has on their life.
Andrew Murray in his book Waiting on God writes, “God’s eye is upon His people: their eye is upon Him. In waiting upon God, our eye, looking up to Him, meets His looking down upon us. This is the blessedness of waiting upon God, that it takes our eyes and thoughts away from ourselves, even our needs and desires, and occupies us with our God.”
“…it takes our eyes and thoughts away from ourselves…” Notice the shift from “me centered” to “God centered”. Jeremiah writes, “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I hope in Him!” The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, To the soul who seeks Him. It is good that one should hope and wait quietly For the salvation of the Lord.” (Lamentations 3:24–26, NKJV) Therein resides the true power not only of Hope but TO wait IN Hope. Hope as wishful thinking affixes our attention on the end result it’s like arriving at a destination instantly. Whereas longing in expectation isn’t just about the destination it’s also the inner transformation brought about by the journey itself.
Hope begets Hope. I am sure you already know this but in case you don’t – whatever we give to God WILL ALWAYS come back to us! On the surface the Gift of Hope seems to be God’s gift to us however the truth is Hope is our Gift to God.
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might!
Grace and PEACE, Amen!
