Celebrating the Gifts of Christmas 2015…
Today we celebrate Jesus as a Baby. We all know the story of Christmas is the story of Jesus’ birth. And because we have not only the Christmas story but the Easter story as well there’s a good chance you’ve never had the occasion to wonder what God was thinking when Jesus’ first arrival was that of a helpless infant. And the scriptures tell us that when Jesus comes again it will not be as a baby.
As important as our need for an adult Jesus is our need to understand him as a baby is equally important. The obvious reason for Jesus’ birth is to illustrate that Jesus was one of us in every way. The birth of Jesus is the story of Son of God coming into our world as a helpless infant. There is nothing more vulnerable than a newborn baby and the one who once stood at the threshold of time… “In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone.” (John 1:1–4, NLT)
When I think of Jesus as an adult it is hard to see myself as his equal (there are those who will agree with me). I have no trouble seeing him as a human yet as a human Jesus’ spiritual depth and faith in God far exceeds any of ours. Yet when I think of Jesus as a baby, growing slowly into adulthood I see him on our level. I believe Jesus as a baby is God’s way of illustrating what and who we can become. Luke writes “Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and all the people.” (Luke 2:52, NLT) There is not one of us alive who could not substitute our name for Jesus’ name.
Jesus was not always the spiritual giant he was while here on earth, he was once a spiritual infant just like me and I like him (and in some ways still am). I need the baby Jesus, I need the teenage Jesus to show me how I too can grow into the man God wants me to be. There’s no need for me to wonder what God was thinking when He sent His Son into the world as a baby – He was thinking of YOU and He was thinking of ME.
Jesus, you’re the “complete package”, you’re earthly story from birth to death to resurrection is my prophetic story. This Christmas as I celebrate your birth I will also celebrate my own because from your life I have life.
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might!
Grace and PEACE, Amen!
