Glory Seed Devotionals, 2016: Expedition of Light and Truth
Our relationship with Jesus goes beyond intellectual…
“You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me!” (John 5:39, NLT, emphasis mine)
In the mystery and complexity of God, there is simplicity. Author M.C. Earle quotes a Letter to Demetrias written by Pelagius in his book Celtic Christian Spirituality: Essential Writings—Annotated and Explained. “Do not let your mind be seduced by theological speculation; the human mind can never grasp the supreme glory of God. Simply follow Jesus wherever he leads.”
On the surface it seems as if Pelagius is debunking theology however Earle adds his comment. “Pelagius, blunt and concise as ever, reminds us that all our speculation will never comprehend the glory of God. Our best course is to follow Jesus, step by step, trusting that the path of love will lead us to where we are called to be.”
Theology opens us up to God however as God says in chapter 55 of Isaiah there are limits to our understanding. ““My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8–9, NLT)
I have discovered (the hard way I might add) that everything has an explanation but not everything is explainable. Having said that (and believe it with all my heart) Jesus provides us a tidbit of insight into the unexplainable, “It was not because of his sins or his parents’ sins,” Jesus answered. “This happened so the power of God could be seen in him.” (John 9:3, NLT, emphasis mine) Even at best that really doesn’t satisfy our deep longing for an explanation it simply opens us up to God (haven’t we been here before).
I see it this way. Someone lost in the jungle doesn’t need an explanation as to how he got lost in the first place he simply needs someone to find him and lead him to safety. In September of 2013 when I woke up in ICU after having heart bypass surgery I didn’t want and explanation into the “jungle” heart surgery mechanics of I simply needed someone to tell I was going to be okay.
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might!
Grace and PEACE, Amen!
