Glory Seed Devotionals, 2016: Year of the Blessing

Breathe on us God…

“Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” (John 20:22, CEV)

This past Sunday as I sat in church my mind wandered back through the last several years as I struggled with difficulty breathing I found myself thumbing through our Hymnal for the song “Breath on me Breathe of God”. As I began reading the words I found myself praying them believing with all my heart God was present and listening. Several minutes later I wrote the following prayer based on my own struggle with pulmonary fibrosis that song. Don’t have a problem with your lungs that’s okay please don’t get the idea this prayer is not for you because we all need God to breathe on us!

Breathe on me your breath, oh God.

Not just your breath but Jesus’ breath as well.

Not just Jesus’ breath but the Spirit’s breath as well.

Breathe on me breath of God until my lungs are pure,

As I struggle to breathe it is your breath I need,

Jesus’ breath will get me through my oxygen starved times,

The Spirit’s breath will ease my own inadequate lung capacity.

Breathe on me breath of Jesus until my lungs are like yours,

Breathe into me new life so I can exhale my old stale life.

Breathe on me breath of the Spirit until my lungs are filled with

Joy, Hope, Love, and Peace.

Breathe on Me Breath of God

By Edwin Hatch, 1886

1… Breathe on me, Breath of God,
fill me with life anew,
that I may love the way you love,
and do what you would do.

2… Breathe on me, Breath of God,
until my heart is pure,
until my will is one with yours,
to do and to endure.

3… Breathe on me, Breath of God,
so shall I never die,
but live with you the perfect life
for all eternity.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might!

Grace and PEACE, Amen!

Gary
