Glory Seed Devotionals, 2016: Year of the Blessing
What is the basis of truth…
Jesus said to the people who believed in Him, “You are truly My disciples if you remain faithful to My teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32 NLT)
At his trial, Pilate asked Jesus, “What is truth?” As far as I know he never received an answer. I don’t know about you but I’ve struggled with putting a definition to truth for most of my adult life. I don’t mean a dictionary definition I mean a definition of truth that I can wrap my life around. I know there are absolute truths but on the other hand there perceived truths, truths subject to our understanding. One such truth is my belief in the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. I believe Pilate was asking a deeper question. I believe he was asking, “What is the basis of truth?”
Putting my understanding of Pilate’s question to my belief in the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, the question then becomes what is the basis of my beliefs. Jesus provided the answer when he said, “…If you remain faithful to My teachings.” From what Jesus was saying the basis for my belief not only in Jesus but in God as well comes from being faithful to Jesus’ teachings and from my time tested experiences with the Holy Spirit. Another important part building a basis for my belief in the truth of Jesus, God, and the Holy Spirit comes not just from my studies but also from my parents, my church family, other Christian sources, and even my encounter with life itself.
“And the truth will set you free,” Jesus said. I believe truth not only sets us free from something or someone but it also sets us free to something or someone, the truth of remaining faithful to Jesus’ teachings not only frees us from our sins but it also sets us free to love. Putting into my life perspective the truthfulness garnered from my belief in the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus has set me free from the negative impact of my serious health issues setting me free so I can enjoy life more fully.
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might!
Grace and PEACE, Amen!
