Glory Seed Devotionals, 2016: Year of the Blessing
Do you love Jesus?
PEACE be unto you!
“A third time He asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, You know everything. You know that I love You.” Jesus said, “Then feed My sheep. (John 21:17 NLT) Like Peter, have you ever been frustrated with Jesus to the extent where you questioned your love for him? I know I have. Let’s stop for a minute and try to understand Peter’s anger (frustration) that motivated him to deny someone he said he’d die for. Our first inclination is to think fear was his motivation. While fear no doubt played a factor it wasn’t the only one anger must have played a significant part as well.
Peter might not only have been afraid of repercussions from knowing Jesus but also he was afraid of facing life without Jesus. Fear is not only one of the most powerful emotions we humans experience it is also a very powerful motivator. That is evident for example when a surviving spouse faced with a life alone becomes angry because a newly deceased spouse has passed away. So it is within reason to think Peter became angry because Jesus let them take him and out of angry denied him.
When Jesus asked Peter if he loved him, or if Jesus were to ask us if we love him we can safely say Jesus already knows the answer. In spite of Peter’s denial, Jesus knew Peter’s love was very much alive. No matter how frustrated we may get with Jesus, he knows we love him. Then why does he ask? Why does he want to hear our response? By asking the question, Jesus expects us to go past our emotions answering from deep in our hearts where our true feelings live. And when we bring our true heart deep feelings to the surface they overshadow our surface emotions. In a sense when we verbalize our inner feelings, we fall in love with Jesus all over again.
Remember the old saying, “I love you, let me count the ways!” It’s not just a saying but a powerful way to get in touch with our true selves.
Believe in presence of the GOD and in the strength of his GRACE!
