Isaiah 43…

Shalom!

When it rains it pours! I am not sure you’re familiar with that phrase or not. I first became familiar with it on a box of Morton Salt (I think it was anyway) but over the years I discovered it can also apply to our lives. And it rain and poured in our lives as recently as this past Sunday! Patti had her right knee replaced two weeks ago tomorrow (prayers work because she is doing wonderful) and then Sunday the 24th I was reaching in the closet to get my Sunday-go-meeting clothes and SNAP! And something snapped in my middle of my back, it took my breath away and put me on my knees, and the rain turned from a gentle rain to a full-blown rainstorm. So, Monday and Tuesday all I did was sit in my chair and to nothing. Then yesterday Patti insisted I find out what happened and my son and daughter-in-law hauled me to the ER to find I had a compression fracture,

Does anyone remember the slogan for Ipana Toothpaste? It went “you wonder where the yellow went you brush your teeth with Ipana Toothpaste.” I didn’t do-nothing Monday and Tuesday like I said because God didn’t immediately come to take my pain away I prayed, “You wonder where God went when gentle rain turns to a full-blown rainstorm?” If you’ve ever had an experience where it seemed God was a million miles away you already know He was so close couldn’t see Him. Because that was where He was for me Monday and Tuesday why it just gave us the “stuff” to endure rather than fix my pain is beyond me, but after eating a little “crow alacarte” I thanked Him for His presence with me the past 3 days and throughout the healing process.

The entire experience has left me wondering why I temporarily keep forgetting the promise in the early verses of Isaiah 43. “…Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.” (Isaiah 43:1–2, NLT)

“God, I promise to do better at remembering the next time! Amen.” Gary…

May God be merciful and bless us. May his face smile with favor on us.” **

Grace and PEACE,

Gary

A special message from James Ryle…

Shalom!

September 22

There is A Calling On Your Life

“Called by God.” (Heb_5:4 KJV)

I was invited to speak at a historic church in the North East, a church that was facing a defining moment in their long history. I realized that showing up and simply preaching a sermon would not be the thing to do – they were desperately needing a word from God, and they were fully expecting me to bring it. I could sense what the Lord was stirring me to say, and on the plane ride to my destination I took a napkin and wrote down these words.

“There is a calling on your life; a purpose that God has assigned to you. Thus, you can make a difference. However, this calling is not uncontested. To answer it one must be ready to contend for it against challenges great and plenty. The key will be in keeping your heart open and responsive to God. In the end a great work will have been wrought, and a lasting legacy endowed with the grace of God. Shudder, therefore, at the thought of saying no.”

Sunday arrived I preached a message about answering the call of God upon our lives, and during the sermon I took out the napkin and read what I had written to the congregation. It was a dramatic moment. I could tell immediately that the Lord was speaking to many.

Perhaps He is speaking to you even now.

There is a call of God upon your life; a purpose He has for you; an assignment for which you are uniquely suited. Your life matters. You can make a difference in some way that counts. There are no inconsequential people – and certainly this is true of you. History is upon us now in its full measure, and the time has never been more certain than now for men and women to answer the call and deliver the goods.

However, you must know that there is an enemy engaged in war against your soul. The call on your life, and you answering it, pose a great threat to this enemy. Thus, he will oppose you in every way – seen and unseen; subtle and spectacular – so as to turn you from your call, deter you from your cause, and diminish your life’s effectiveness and potential. Do not cooperate with him! Fight the good fight to become the man and woman God created you to be, to fulfill the purpose for which you were born, to achieve the goal toward which you press. Submit yourself to God and He will exalt you. Resist the devil, and he will flee!

Open your heart to God and let Him fill it with His Spirit. He will give you the desire to go the distance once you decide to do so. He will honor your dedication by granting you success day by day — here a little, there a little — until at length a great work will have been achieved in you and through you for others. He will garner your determination with His supply of strength, so that no weapon formed against you will prosper, no lie spoken against you will prevail, no bandit sent to rob you will succeed, and no word or work you do will fall ineffective to the ground. You will triumph as He takes hold of your hand and secures your labors in His Name.

Even now as you read these words the Lord makes this offer to you.

“Here am I, Lord; send me!” This was how Isaiah responded. Won’t you follow his example and do the same? After all — there is a calling on your life.

Is it Rust or Trust…

Shalom!

“What sorrow awaits those who look to Egypt for help, trusting their horses, chariots, and charioteers and depending on the strength of human armies instead of looking to the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.” (Isaiah 31:1 NLT)

The words of Isaiah echoes across the eons of time and have significance for each of us today. I know there’s a 99.9999% chance none of us look to Egypt to help but we may at times turn and trust in our careers, our bank accounts, our cars, our possessions, but Isaiah is telling us no, no, no trust in God.

I completely understand how hard it is to place our trust in God, who we cannot see when there are so many things we can see that offer us peace and prosperity. Yet as history testifies everything the world offers us is temporary at best. I remember my dad telling me. “In life you need to start at the bottom and work your way up.” While that must be true to a certain extent this carries more truth, “In all circumstances in life it is better to start at the top with God then at the bottom.”

As hard as it is to believe in trusting an invisible God the Psalmist offers us this ray of hope not as a probability or a possibility but as a sure thing. “I look up to the mountains— does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth! He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber. Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps. The Lord himself watches over you! The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade. The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon at night. The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.” (Psalm 121:1–8, NLT)

Crustyism 1:3: The world spells trust “R-U-S-T”, the Holy Spirit spells trust T-R-U-S-T. Do you want to RUST or TRUST?

May God be merciful and bless us. May his face smile with favor on us.” **

Grace and PEACE,

Gary

God’s Greatest Miracle…

Shalom!

“Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.” (Romans 12:3 NLT)

The Apostle Paul cautions us not to think of ourselves more important than we should think but, on the other hand we should not think of ourselves more unimportant than we should.

When we allow ourselves or we allow others to make us feel unimportant we begin a 3D downhill slide of depression, despair, and disappointment. Unimportance is one of the most powerful forces we face in our daily lives coming from a variety of sources – employers, co-workers, people with whom we share the roadways with, families, our failures, health issues, careers.

I remember while at a Navy facility in Philadelphia of seeing a poster that went something like this: “If you want to see how important you are then stick your hand in a bucket of water and the space left when you pull it out is how important you are.” Wow! I thought (then) how profound. Today however, I think how stupid! Because there are people in my life who are no longer here that had they not been in my life I would have turned out very differently! In fact my parents are so important I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for them.

Here is the most important life/living factor in our lives. God felt us so important he sent is Son into our lives to save us from self-destruction. If you think about the delicate balances in our world and universe you can see there needs to be a delicate balance between importance and un-importance in our lives. Today in your communications with God ask him to help you discover the proper balance of importance and un-importance then ask him to help you achieve that balance.

Individually and corporately WE ARE God’s Greatest Miracles!

May God be merciful and bless us. May his face smile with favor on us.” **

Grace and PEACE,

Gary

Staying surrendered, part two…

Shalom!

“Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28, NLT)

I remember many years ago when the Holy Spirit re-ignited the seed of faith implanted in me because of my godly parents reading, “Christians don’t have problems, they pray them away.” Wow! That’s for me I heard myself saying, but it didn’t take long for me to experience the fallacy of those words. And as a result, I suppressed the Holy Spirit’s attempts to get me to drop to my knees and surrender to God. Yet the more problems that cropped up the more persistent the Holy Spirit became. But slowly over the years the Holy Spirit began making headway.

I was sure I’d surrendered completely until late June and Early July when pulmonary fibrosis took a turn in the wrong direction. “We’ve done all we can, there’s nothing else can be done,” the doctor told Patti and me. It was then I realized I was still holding out and found myself praying, “LORD God, take me, take all of me,” And then in spite of the conflict that continues to rage in my “outside life” my “inner life” rests in the Peaceful Wings of the Holy Spirit.

Andrew Murray in his book Absolute Surrender provides us with the encouragement we need to stay surrendered no matter what life throws in our pathway. “A life of absolute surrender has its difficulties. I do not deny that. Yes, it has something far more than difficulties: it is a life that with men is absolutely impossible. But by the grace of God, by the power of God, by the power of the Holy Spirit dwelling in us, it is a life to which we are destined, and a life that is possible for us, praise God! Let us believe that God will maintain it.”

May God be merciful and bless us. May his face smile with favor on us.” **

Grace and PEACE,

Gary

Staying surrendered…

Shalom!

All to Jesus I surrender
All to Him I freely give
I will ever love and trust Him
In His presence daily live.

(All to Jesus I surrender verse 1)

God has Set his sights on YOU and He will not quit until He has YOU not just a part of YOU but all of YOU! And He started even before YOU were born. He started in a cow barn with the birth of Jesus, And the day YOU were born He intensified His passion for 100% YOU! A.W. Tozer in his book Knowledge of the Holy offers this hint at only a part of lies ahead for YOU when YOU wave the white flag and surrender all to Him.

“How completely satisfying to turn from our limitations to a God who has none. Eternal years lie in His heart. For Him time does not pass, it remains; and those who are in Christ share with Him all the riches of limitless time and endless years. God never hurries. There are no deadlines against which He must work. Only to know this is to quiet our spirits and relax our nerves. For those out of Christ, time is a devouring beast…”

The easy part of surrendering our lives to the Divine is surrendering. But once the surrendering part is over next comes the hard part, staying surrendered! But when it comes to the point when we want to take our white flag back the words of Peter urge us to stay surrendered. “So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while. These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.” (1 Peter 1:6–7, NLT)

All to Jesus I surrender
Make me Saviour wholly Thine
Let me feel the Holy Spirit
Truly know that Thou art mine.

(All to Jesus I Surrender verse 3)

May God be merciful and bless us. May his face smile with favor on us.” **

Grace and PEACE,

Gary

Glory Seed Devotional’s, 2017: Anticipating and Experiencing God…

A healthy fear of the dark…

Shalom!

From my childhood into my early adulthood I was afraid of the dark but over time conquered it. And now that I am entering senior adulthood I have a healthy fear of the dark. What I mean by a healthy fear of the dark is when my life becomes darkened by circumstances beyond my control I turn control over to someone who has ultimate control of my life, God. And then God begins not only take control of the situation He also turns His Light on us as illustrated in the scriptures. “God constantly encourages us to trust Him in the dark. “And I will give you treasures hidden in the darkness— secret riches. I will do this so you may know that I am the Lord, the God of Israel, the one who calls you by name.” (Isaiah 45:3, NLT)

What intrigued me about what Isaiah was saying was this, “And I will give you treasures hidden in the darkness— secret riches.” What are the hidden treasures available to those who trust God? As I became a “Treasure Hunter” I found these hidden diamonds: “Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.” (Psalm 23:4, NLT)

And the diamonds get bigger and more valuable: “Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”” (John 8:12, NLT)

And last but not least: “Listen to me, dear brothers and sisters. Hasn’t God chosen the poor in this world to be rich in faith? Aren’t they the ones who will inherit the Kingdom he promised to those who love him?” (James 2:5, NLT)

Crustyism 1.2: When life gets dark don’t look for a light switch, instead look for God.

May God be merciful and bless us. May his face smile with favor on us.” **

Grace and PEACE,

Gary
