Glory Seed Devotional’s 2018 Experiencing Jesus, the Prelude to Life
Just a reminder…
Paul writing to Timothy instructs him. “But you, man of God, flee from these things, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of eternal life to which you were called and about which you have made a good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” (1 Timothy 6:11-12) However, as time driven as those instructions appear in the bible they are never-the-less timeless.
If you wanted to you could read them like this. “But you, your name of God, flee from these things, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of eternal life to which you were called and about which you have made a good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”
Saturday when I read them the Holy Spirit stopped me at the phrase, “Fight the good fight of faith.” Immediately that reminded me of something Jesus said in Matthew’s gospel, “Don’t assume that I came to bring peace on the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.” (Matthew 10:34) I see Jesus telling us not to just sit back and wait for someone to come along and bail us out, but to meet our adversities and difficulties head-on and begin fighting not only with prayer but also wielding the gifts of the Spirit.
Paul further instructs us to. “For this reason take up the full armor of God, so that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having prepared everything, to take your stand. Stand, therefore, with truth like a belt around your waist, righteousness like armor on your chest, and your feet sandaled with readiness for the gospel of peace. In every situation take up the shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit—which is the word of God.” (Ephesians 6:13–17)
Paul began those instructions by telling us our fight is against the powers of evil, however, we not only struggle against evil we also fight against the nativity associated in a world that suggests and acts as if God is obsolete, and then there’s our own individual struggles. I don’t mean to sound as if everything is stacked against us, but sometimes we need a reality check and the reality the Holy Spirit has “armed” with, “I have said these things to you so that in me you may have peace. In the world you have affliction, but have courage! I have conquered the world.” (John 16:33, LEB) You have no doubt heard it said, “You cannot out give God.” It can also be said, “Nothing and no one can overpower God.”
